A couple of weeks ago, I set you the challenge of working with an anagram dictionary. I promised you a few hints. Here they are:
- A would be the first entry (with the definite article A listed as its word) and AA would be listed as the second (a type of lava). What might the third entry be? > Essentially, you’re looking for a word with as many A’s as possible. My answer is a foodstuff.
- What would the first entry under B be? > It’s not enough that this word has plenty of B’s, it can’t have any A’s. Think Shakespearean openings. It’s a hyphenated word.
- BIT, ALLOY and LORRY are all entries, yet words in themselves – that is, the letters are in alphabetical order. What is the longest such entry you can think of? > This word is an adjective, and it could be applied to clouds.
- AEGINLRT would list several words – 5, I think. Can you find them all? > There are 3 -ING words, and two mathematical words (one of them very common).
- What is the longest entry that wouldn’t repeat any letters? > The longest word I can think of is a mark you might find at the front of a book. It’s 9 letters.
- Difficult one now: what might the last entry in the dictionary be? Be careful with this one! > The temptation is to go for Z words, but there wouldn’t be any entries under Z, because any word would have an earlier letter in it. The word I’m thinking of is a 3-letter word, and is clothing related.
Answers in a couple of weeks. Good luck!
